Arrive sober, rested, hydrated, and having eaten. Wear clean, comfortable clothing that gives your artist easy access to the tattoo placement.
Bring direction, not a tattoo to copy.
Reference images, placement, approximate size, and the overall feel you want are helpful. Your artist will work through the final design and fit with you.
